Two days in Luang Prabang is enough to fall completely in love with this UNESCO World Heritage town. It is not enough to see everything — but it is enough to understand why people come back again and again.
This is exactly how I would spend 2 days in Luang Prabang — based on our own family trip.

Day 1 — Arrival, Mount Phousi Sunset, Night Market and Dinner
Morning — Arrive and Check In
- Arrive at Luang Prabang International Airport
- Check into your hotel — we stayed at U Luang Prabang (highly recommended)
- Rest and freshen up
- Have lunch at your hotel or a nearby café
Afternoon — Mount Phousi
- Head to Mount Phousi around 3-4pm
- Climb approximately 100 steps to the golden stupa at the top
- Look for the Bodhi tree sapling gifted by India — a quietly moving moment
- Stay for the sunset — the Mekong river and mountains from the top are extraordinary
- Entry fee: approximately 20,000 Kip, USD accepted.
- Tip: Arrive at least an hour before sunset for a good spot
Evening — Night Market and Dinner
- Browse the Night Market near Mount Phousi
- Pick up handwoven textiles and souvenirs
- Dinner at Little Lao Restaurant — authentic Laotian cuisine
- Must try: Ping Gai (grilled chicken), Pang Gai curry and the famous funky medium sauce
Day 2 — Full Day Tour: Kuang Si, Whiskey Village, PakOu Caves and Mekong Cruise

This is the highlight of any Luang Prabang visit — book through your Klook or Viator or your hotel.
Morning — Kuang Si Waterfall
- Depart early — arrive before crowds
- Kuang Si Waterfall — tiered turquoise falls in dense jungle
- Swim in the crystal clear pools — bring your swimsuit!
- Allow 2-3 hours here minimum
- Tip: Water shoes recommended — rocks are slippery
Late Morning — Whiskey Village
- Stop at a traditional Laotian Whiskey Village
- Watch locals ferment rice whiskey using traditional methods
- See the famous bottles with preserved scorpions and snakes — medicinal tradition!
- Fascinating cultural experience unlike anything else
Afternoon — PakOu Caves
- PakOu Caves — limestone caves filled with thousands of Buddha statues
- Steep but short climb to upper cave
- Well lit and clean — moving and atmospheric
Late Afternoon/Evening — Mekong River Cruise
- Board your cruise after lunch
- 4-4.5 hours on the Mekong river
- Watch villages, jungle and mountains drift by
- Stay on deck for the sunset over the mountains
- Dinner at Bella River Terrace — romantic riverside setting. This is very close to U Luang Prabang. You can literally walk there.
- Try: steamed fish, pad Thai, grilled chicken
