Halong Bay Overnight Cruise — Like Being Treated as King and Queen on the Water

There is a particular kind of disbelief that sets in when you wake up in a beautifully appointed room, look out the window, and see limestone karsts rising straight out of turquoise water on every side — and then remember you are on a boat.

That was Halong Bay for us. An overnight cruise that felt less like a tour and more like being treated, briefly and completely, like royalty.

The Cruise — Lan Ha Bay, Mon Cheri

We booked the Mon Cheri cruise in Lan Ha Bay — part of the wider Halong Bay region but quieter and arguably even more scenic than the more crowded main bay. The boat itself set the tone immediately: elegant, comfortable, genuinely luxurious. This was not a budget backpacker cruise — this was the kind of experience where every detail had been considered.

From the moment we boarded, the sense of being looked after was constant. Staff who anticipated what we needed before we asked. Rooms with views that made you stop mid-conversation just to look outside.

What We Did

Kayaking
Paddling out among the limestone karsts, the water calm and clear beneath us, towering cliffs rising on either side. This is the quintessential Halong Bay experience and it did not disappoint — being at water level among formations this dramatic puts the scale of the bay into proper perspective.

Cooking Class
A hands-on session learning to prepare Vietnamese dishes onboard — a lovely, relaxed way to spend part of the afternoon and walk away with a few new recipes to try at home.

Tai Chi Session
A calm, meditative morning session on deck, the bay stretching out around us in the early light. A genuinely peaceful way to start the day.

Squid Fishing
In the evening, we tried squid fishing off the side of the boat — more about the experience and the fun of it than the actual catch, but a memorable addition to the evening.

The Food

Every single meal was a full five-course affair. This deserves its own mention because it was consistently excellent — fresh seafood, beautifully presented Vietnamese dishes, and the kind of dining experience you don’t expect on a boat in the middle of a bay. Each meal felt like an event in itself.

The Rooms and the View

This is what stays with me most. Waking up and seeing mountains and the bay directly from our room — genuinely unable to process that we were floating on water surrounded by some of the most dramatic limestone scenery in the world. The rooms were spacious, beautifully furnished, and positioned so the view was never out of sight.

We were treated like a king and queen for those two days. That is not an exaggeration — the level of service, comfort and genuine care on this cruise elevated the entire experience well beyond what we expected.

Practical Tips for Booking a Halong Bay Cruise

Choose Lan Ha Bay over the main Halong Bay if you want a quieter, less crowded experience with equally — arguably more — dramatic scenery.

Go overnight, not a day trip. The sunrise and sunset from the water, plus the evening activities, are what make the experience memorable. A day trip simply cannot offer this.

Check what’s included. Our cruise included kayaking, cooking class, Tai Chi and squid fishing as part of the package — look for cruises that build in a range of activities rather than just sailing and meals.

Pack light, comfortable clothing. You’ll be moving between kayaking, deck activities and dining — practical layers work best.

Why Halong Bay Belongs on Every Vietnam Itinerary

Halong Bay is one of those places that is genuinely as beautiful as the photographs suggest — which is rare. The limestone karsts rising from emerald water create a landscape unlike anywhere else, and experiencing it overnight, with activities woven through the day and five-course meals bookending it all, turns a “must-see” into one of the most memorable two days of an entire Southeast Asia trip.

If your Vietnam itinerary includes Hanoi, build in the time for an overnight Halong Bay cruise. It is worth every hour.
