Himachal Classic Circuit — Dalhousie, Dharamshala, Kasauli & Shimla (Honest 10-Day Guide)

Before we found the quiet corners of Himachal — Jibhi, Tirthan, Kinnaur — we did what most families do first. We did the classic circuit: Dalhousie, Dharamshala, Kasauli, Shimla.

And honestly? You should too, if it’s your first time in these mountains. The classic route is classic for a reason.

This is our full 10-day itinerary from that trip, done as a family of three with our 10-year-old — the real route, what each stay cost, and the honest bits: which hotels we’d book again, which we’d avoid, and where the crowds are worth putting up with.

The route at a glance

Getting there: we flew Pune → Kangra Airport, which puts you close to Dharamshala and saves the long haul from Delhi or Chandigarh. From there we had a private car with driver for the whole trip — the same driver we liked enough to hire again for our 2026 Kinnaur trip.

Dalhousie — 2 nights

Cold. Properly cold, more than we expected. And we loved it anyway.

Ganji Pahari — a short, lovely walk to a bald-topped hill with views across the valley.

Khajjiar — often called “mini Switzerland,” and for once the nickname is earned: a wide green meadow ringed by deodar forest. Touristy, still beautiful.

Chamera Lake — calm blue water in a deep valley. Worth the drive.

We had a genuinely fantastic dinner at the Sarovar.

Where we stayed: AltLife Luxe, ₹5,000/night. It was okay — but be warned, there are a lot of stairs to climb. With luggage, or older parents, or a tired child, that matters. It was one of two stays on this trip that made us far more careful about reading reviews next time.

Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj — 3 nights

The heart of the trip, and the stop we’d give the most time to again.

The Dalai Lama monastery and museum was the highlight — genuinely moving, and the museum gives context that makes the whole visit land differently. Do not skip the museum.

The cable car from Dharamshala up to McLeod Ganj was our first ever cable car ride — before any of the ones we later took in Vietnam. Short, scenic, and a lovely way to arrive.

McLeod Ganj is crowded, but the market is good and the food is better. We ate well at Labooze.

Dal Lake — honestly, skip it. Small, unremarkable, and not worth the detour when you have limited days.

Where we stayed: Great Empire, ₹8,500/night — excellent, with a full river view. Two caveats: it’s a bit remote, and it’s a fair distance from McLeod Ganj, so factor in drive time. Worth it for the setting.

Kasauli — 1 night

We’ll be blunt: we did nothing here.

Our stay — Sukoon Cottage, ₹2,500/night — was the worst of the trip and very remote, so we arrived, stayed the night, and left. Kasauli itself may well deserve better; we can’t tell you, because we never really saw it.

If you’re going, choose your stay carefully and give it more than one night. Ours was a lesson, not a review of the town.

Shimla — 2 nights

Shimla is crowded and chaotic. It’s also unavoidable, and there are moments here that make it worthwhile.

Where we stayed: EdgeWorth, ₹5,000/night — fantastic, and the best-value stay of the trip. We had breakfast in the garden with birds singing, which was the most peaceful hour we spent in a genuinely hectic town.

One quirk worth knowing: EdgeWorth sits centrally, close to the circuit house and the high-security bungalows. The President was visiting during our stay, and reaching our own hotel became genuinely difficult. If there’s a VIP visit on, budget extra time.

Mall Road is fine — mainly a good shopping stop.

Jakhu Temple gave us the story we still tell: a monkey jumped on my head to grab my earrings. It was frightening in the moment and funny only afterwards. The monkeys at Jakhu are bold and organised. Take off earrings, sunglasses and anything dangling before you go up, and hold onto your bags.

Chandigarh — 1 night

A shopping day and a flight home. KLG Altoria, ₹6,000/night, was good. We shopped at sector 17 and it was very good.

The honest advice section

1. Read hotel reviews properly. Dalhousie and Kasauli taught us this. On our 2026 Kinnaur trip we picked every stay far more carefully, and the difference was enormous.
2. Fly into Kangra if you can. It cuts hours off the journey compared with starting from Delhi or Chandigarh.
3. Hire a car with a driver. We did, and liked ours enough to book him again two years later.
4. Give Dharamshala the most nights. Three felt right. Dalhousie two. Kasauli deserves more than we gave it — or skip it.
5. At Jakhu, remove your earrings. Learn from my head.
6. Skip Dal Lake. Use the time in McLeod Ganj instead.
7. Check for VIP visits in Shimla if your hotel is central.

Is the classic circuit good for families?

Yes — this is the easier Himachal. Our daughter was 10 and managed everything comfortably. The drives are shorter than in Kinnaur, the towns have plenty for children, and the cable car and monkeys were her highlights (the monkeys rather less mine).
