Vang Vieng budget guide — this is one of those questions that matters a lot when planning a Laos itinerary because Vang Vieng sits between two major stops (Luang Prabang and Vientiane) and the question is always whether it is worth adding a night or whether the costs push the trip over budget.
Short answer: it is absolutely worth adding, and the costs are very manageable — with one exception.
That exception is the hot air balloon, which is the main experience in Vang Vieng and comes at a price. But it is, without question, worth every rupee.
Here is our complete Vang Vieng budget from a family of three.
Getting There — Train from Luang Prabang
The train journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is one of the more pleasant surprises of a Laos trip. The Laos-China Railway runs a modern, comfortable, air-conditioned service between the two cities — a far cry from the slow bus journey that used to be the only option.
Our cost: ₹5,000 for 3 people — roughly ₹1,667 per person.
Journey time: Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours — scenic, smooth and genuinely enjoyable.
Practical tips:
- Book tickets in advance, especially during peak season — the train fills up
- Trains run several times daily in each direction
- The station is outside Luang Prabang city centre — factor in a tuk tuk to the station
- Carry your passport for ticket purchase
- Do not carry any sprays, knives, pocket knives. They are confiscated.
This train journey is one of the highlights of Laos travel and makes Vang Vieng very accessible from Luang Prabang. Don’t take the bus if the train is available.
The Biggest Cost — Hot Air Balloon
Let’s address this immediately because it is the dominant expense of a Vang Vieng visit.
Our cost: ₹17,000 per person — approximately ₹51,000 for a family of three.
This is not a small amount. But here is the context: the hot air balloon at sunset over Vang Vieng is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences in Southeast Asia. One hour floating above mountains and rivers and fields in the golden late afternoon light — it is the kind of memory that lasts.
For a family trip that has already covered the Kuang Si waterfall and Angkor Wat sunrise, the balloon at Vang Vieng completes a set of genuinely once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We did not hesitate and we have not once thought it was too expensive.
What the price includes:
- Jeep pick up and drop from hotel
- Approximately 1 hour in the air
- Sunset timing flight
Booking tip: Book directly with operators in Vang Vieng town or through your hotel. Prices may vary slightly between operators — compare two or three before booking.
Alternatively book in advance like we did – Book Hot Air Balloon experience.
Hotel
We stayed at the Riverside Boutique Resort — a beautifully located property right on the Nam Song river with pool and mountain views.
Food at the hotel restaurant was noticeably more affordable than Luang Prabang — good quality meals at a comfortable price, eaten with a view of the river and mountains that made every meal feel special.
| Hotel Type | Approximate Cost Per Night |
|---|---|
| Budget guesthouse | ₹800–2,000 |
| Mid-range riverside hotel | ₹3,000–6,000 |
| Boutique resort (Riverside Boutique etc.) | ₹5,000–10,000 |
Our recommendation: Pay a little more for a riverside property. The difference in experience — waking up to mountains, eating with a river view, watching the sunset from your balcony — is genuinely significant in Vang Vieng.
Food
Vang Vieng food costs are lower than Luang Prabang, which is itself not an expensive city. Our hotel restaurant served generous, well-prepared meals at very reasonable prices. The town centre has plenty of options across all budgets.
| Meal Type | Approximate Cost Per Person |
|---|---|
| Hotel restaurant meal | ₹300–600 |
| Local restaurant in town | ₹200–400 |
| Roadside barbeque skewers | $1–2 (₹80–165) |
| Cafe / breakfast | ₹150–300 |
The roadside barbeque deserves special mention — chicken skewers for about $2 from street stalls at night, eaten standing on the pavement watching the town go by. Simple, delicious and completely authentic.
Activities
| Activity | Approximate Cost Per Person |
|---|---|
| Hot air balloon (sunset) | ₹17,000 |
| Tham Chang cave + Blue Lagoon | ₹200–400 |
| Kayaking half day | ₹500–1,000 |
| Tuk tuk around town | ₹200–500 per trip |
| Nam Song river walk | Free |
| Watching sunset from hotel | Free |
Complete Budget — Family of 3, 1 Night + 1 Full Day
| Item | Cost (Family of 3) |

Budget Tips for Vang Vieng
- The balloon is the splurge — budget for it deliberately. If you are going to Vang Vieng, the balloon is the reason. Build it into your trip budget from the start rather than treating it as optional.
- Eat at your hotel if it has a view — the setting adds enormous value to a simple meal in Vang Vieng.
- Walk where possible — the town is compact and the river walk is free and beautiful.
- Book the balloon in advance — operators sometimes offer slightly better rates for pre-booking, and availability at sunset is limited.
- Currency: Lao Kip officially but USD widely accepted. Thai Baht also used. Keep small denomination USD bills handy.
- ATMs are available in town — withdraw what you need on arrival.
Vang Vieng is not the most budget-friendly stop on a Laos itinerary if you do the balloon — but it is the most memorable. And the train journey, the river, the mountains and the roadside barbeque cost almost nothing at all.
