Halong Bay is not cheap. That’s the honest starting point.
An overnight cruise on a good boat in Lan Ha Bay costs significantly more than most other activities in Vietnam. But compared to what it delivers — a night on the water among UNESCO-listed limestone karsts, all meals included, kayaking, Tai Chi at sunrise, pickup from your train station and drop to the airport — the value is real. The question isn’t whether it’s worth it. It is. The question is how to plan your budget so it doesn’t derail the rest of your trip.
Here’s exactly what an overnight Halong Bay cruise costs, what’s included, and where you can save and where you shouldn’t.
What We Paid — Our Real Numbers
We booked the Mon Cheri cruise in Lan Ha Bay for a family of 3. The total cost was ₹62,000 — and here is everything that was included for that price:
- Comfortable cabin on board for the night
- All meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner (five courses each)
- Pickup from the train station on arrival
- Drop to the airport on departure
- Kayaking through Lan Ha Bay
- Cooking class on board
- Tai Chi session at sunrise
- Squid fishing after dark
- All activity equipment and guides
No hidden extras, no scrambling for transport. Everything from the moment we arrived at the station to the moment we reached the airport was handled.
For a family of 3, ₹62,000 works out to approximately ₹20,700 per person for a full overnight experience including all meals and transfers. That is genuinely good value for what it delivers.

Where to Save — and Where Not To
Save here:
- Drinks: Mark-up on alcohol on cruise boats is significant. Water and Vietnamese tea are always included and free. Keeping drinks modest saves ₹1,000–2,000 easily.
- Duration: A 1-night cruise gives you 90% of the Halong Bay experience. A 2-night adds cost without proportionally adding to the core experience — unless you genuinely want to slow down and spend more time on the water.
- Extras: Spa services on board are convenient but pricey. Save the massage for Sapa or elsewhere in Vietnam where it costs a fraction of the price.
Don’t save here:
- The cruise tier itself. The gap between a budget boat and a mid-range or premium one is the difference between a disappointing trip and an unforgettable night. Halong Bay is a once-in-a-trip experience. This is not where to cut corners.
- Bay choice. Lan Ha Bay over the crowded main Halong Bay route is always worth the choice — same scenery, far fewer boats.
- Transfers. Having pickup from the station and drop to the airport included — as we did with the Mon Cheri — removes enormous stress from the Halong Bay leg of a multi-city trip. If your cruise offers this, take it.
Is Halong Bay Worth ₹62,000?
For a family of 3, yes — completely and without hesitation.
₹62,000 for three people to spend a night among the most spectacular bay scenery in the world, eat five-course meals three times, kayak through silent limestone channels, watch the sunrise from the water, and have all transport handled — that is not expensive. That is good value dressed up in extraordinary surroundings.
Budget for it from the start of your Vietnam planning, treat it as the centrepiece it deserves to be, and don’t compromise on the boat or the bay.
