What a Himachal Road Trip Actually Costs — Two Trips, Real Numbers (2026)

Most Himachal budget posts give you a range and a shrug. This one gives you what we actually paid, twice, for the same family of three.

We have done Himachal properly two times: the classic circuit in May 2024 — Dalhousie, Dharamshala, Kasauli, Shimla — and an offbeat 12-day route in May 2026 through Jibhi, Tirthan Valley and Kinnaur. Same family, same travel style, two very different routes.

Here is what each one cost.

Trip 2: Offbeat Himachal, May 2026 — 12 days

Route: Chandigarh → Jibhi (2n) → Tirthan (3n) → Jeori (1n) → Reckong Peo (1n) → Batseri, Sangla (2n) → Thanedar (1n) → Chandigarh (1n)

The total: ₹2,35,000 for a family of three

Everything else — private car with driver for 11 days, all stays, food, entries₹1,75,000

Breakfast was included everywhere. At Shepherd’s Lore, all three meals were included — which is why ₹10,000 a night is less steep than it first looks.

Trip 1: The Classic Circuit, May 2024 — 10 days

Note the flight cost: flying into Kangra and out of Chandigarh is more expensive than a simple return, but it saves an entire day of driving at each end. We considered it worth it.

What the two trips tell you

1. Accommodation is the biggest single lever

Our 2026 stays ranged from ₹2,500 to ₹10,000 a night. If you swapped Shepherd’s Lore and Banjara for mid-range options, you would take a significant amount off the total — but you would also lose the two best nights of the trip. That is the honest trade-off.

2. The car is not optional, and it is not cheap

We hired a private car with driver for both trips, and we would do it again without hesitating. Himachal’s roads — especially in Kinnaur — are narrow, rough and slow. A small car is advisable; large SUVs struggle on the tight stretches.

We liked our 2024 driver enough to book the same person again in 2026.

3. Flights are a bigger line item than people expect

₹60,000 for the 2026 trip, ₹94,000 for 2024 — the latter because we flew into Kangra and out of Chandigarh, an open-jaw route that costs more but saves a full day of driving at each end.

For the classic circuit, Kangra Airport puts you far closer to Dalhousie and Dharamshala than Delhi or Chandigarh would. For the Kinnaur route, Chandigarh is the practical entry point.

4. Offbeat is not automatically cheaper

The 2026 Kinnaur route cost ₹2,35,000 over 12 days. The 2024 classic circuit came to at least ₹1,48,000 over 10 days before car and food.

Offbeat costs more per day — more distance, more driver hours, and the best stays being the expensive ones. It buys you quiet, not savings.

How to do Himachal for less

Honest levers, in order of impact:

  1. Trim the premium nights. Shepherd’s Lore and Banjara were our two most expensive stays and our two best. Keep one, downgrade the other.
  2. Reduce the route. Kinnaur is expensive mostly because it is far. Jibhi and Tirthan alone make an excellent, much cheaper week.
  3. Fewer, longer stops. Every extra stop adds driver hours. Three nights in one valley costs less than one night in each of three.
  4. Travel in shoulder season. We went in May both times, which is peak-adjacent.
  5. What we would not cut: the driver. Self-driving these roads to save money is a bad trade.

What we would spend differently next time

  • Two nights at Thanedar instead of one — we rushed it and regretted it
  • Better hotel research for the budget stays — Kasauli in 2024 taught us this; our 2026 choices were far more carefully vetted
  • Everything else, the same

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Himachal trip cost for a family of 3?

Our 12-day offbeat Himachal trip in May 2026 cost ₹2,35,000 total, including ₹60,000 in flights from Pune. Our 10-day classic circuit in May 2024 came to ₹1,48,000 for flights and accommodation alone (₹94,000 of that was flights, flying into Kangra and out of Chandigarh).

How much are homestays in Himachal?

Ours ranged from ₹2,500 a night in Reckong Peo to ₹10,000 at Shepherd’s Lore in Sangla Valley, with breakfast included everywhere.

Do you need a private car in Himachal?

We would say yes. The roads are narrow and rough, especially in Kinnaur, and a local driver makes the whole trip easier and safer. Hire a small car.

Is offbeat Himachal cheaper than Shimla and Manali?

No. Our remote Kinnaur route cost more than the classic circuit — greater distances, more driver hours, and the best stays being the pricier ones.

Which airport should you fly into for Himachal?

Kangra for Dalhousie and Dharamshala; Chandigarh for Jibhi, Tirthan and Kinnaur.

How can you reduce the cost of a Himachal trip?

Shorten the route (Jibhi and Tirthan alone make a great week), stay longer in fewer places, and downgrade one of the premium stays. Do not cut the driver.
